After working in the pubs, school meals, university catering, and conference sectors of the hospitality industry Anne Pierce went on to complete a PhD investigating cook chill catering systems at the Dorset Institute of Higher Education (now Bournemouth University). She then took time off to travel before joining the Hotel and Catering Training Board in 1988 initially as a researcher looking at labour market issues.

Following the privatisation of the training board in 1989, she experienced rapid career development and when she left in November 1997 was Director of the Hospitality Training Foundation - a body recognised by the UK Government as the National Training Organisation – with responsibility for labour market research, the development of flexible training support, careers promotion, vocational education and training and policy development.  She had built her team from a base of three in 1989 to 35 strong when she left – having increased the turnover from £40,000 a year in 1989 to over £500,000 in 1997.

In November 1997 she became Chief Executive of Springboard – a national charity which helps young, unemployed and disadvantaged people prosper through careers in hospitality, leisure, travel and tourism. She has led the development of Springboard such that it is now the first port of call for specialist careers information, advice and guidance, produced an innovative portfolio of products, programmes and services designed to help inform potential recruits, provide them with opportunities for work experience and to help them make a smooth transition into employment in the industry.

Springboard’s trading subsidiary – Springboard UK works with and for the industry and is dedicated to promoting hospitality, leisure and tourism as a first choice career, attracting new talent and working with its business partners to address HR challenges and skills shortages. Anne has transformed Springboard over the last eleven years:

    • Built the team from two in London to 40 nation-wide
    • Increased financial resources from £70K in 97/98 to an annual turnover now in excess of £1.6M a year
    • Consistently providing up to date and sound specialist careers information to reach over one million potential recruits annually; respond to nearly 50,000 careers enquiries a year, and memorably promote the industry as a Great Place to Work
    • Each year hundreds of thousands of people benefit directly from Springboard’s services

She is a firm believer in finding practical and workable solutions and promoting the industry as an exciting, rewarding and progressive career. She was awarded an MBE in 2004 for her contribution to the Hospitality industry and received the coveted Special Award at the 2008 Cateys – the Industry’s Oscars.

She is married, with four step-children, enjoys running, swimming and cycling, losing at squash to her husband (but nobody else), enjoys cooking, wine and of course cocktails
